US Civil War -- Rear Admiral John Adolphus Dahlgren (1809-1870), John Dahlgren was a lifelong Navy man. As an officer in the 1800s, he created the Navy's Ordnance Dept. and invented smooth bore howitzers that came to be used aboard nearly all Navy ships.
