Among noteworthy detailsshould be mentioned the two large banner-stavelockers under the tower ; the library over theporch, bequeathed by Dr Knightsbridge in 1679 ;the remarkable monument to Thomas (1566) andAvice (1557) Mildmay, now much obscured bythe organ ; and the very quaint incised muralstone to Matthew Rudd and family, 161 5, againstthe south wall by the south chapel. Mention tooshould be made of the highly valuable volume ofChurchwarden Accounts from 1557 to 1668. The 114. CHELMSFORD entries show that elaborate miracle plays wereperformed in this church as late as 1576. As toimprovements in the last half century, the westgallery was removed in 1837. The side gallerieswere removed in 1873, when a second north aisleand a north transept were added. A clerestorywas given to the chancel in 1878. In 1884 therewas a general refitting of the interior, and MrChancellor spent /400 on the restoration of theporch. In 1899-1900 jf3500 was spent on therestoration of the walls, the reseating throughoutin oak and other alterations, and a new organ wasprovided. The chancel was redecorated in 1904,and ^600 ^^^ spent in tower repairs in 1905.(For a detailed account of the church and itshistory, see Dr Coxs Cathedral Church and Seeof Essex, 1908.)
