This most remarkable plant novelty has created a great sensation among flower lovers in Europe and in this country wherever it has been shown. Specimens were exhibited at some of the Chrysanthemum shows last fall, and drew crowds to see them. It was discovered in New Guinea by Mons. Micholitz the famous botanist, and collec- tor for Mr. Sander of England, who found it grow- ing not only in the ground, but on the tops of the mud huts of the natives. He was so struck with the beauty and value of the plants thathe collected specimens, and in order to ensue their safe ship- ment to England, travelled three thousand five hundred miles with them to Singapore. The Lon- don, England, Garden, which gives a handsome colored plate of it says : "The great charm of this novelty is in its long drooping tail-like flower spikes attaining a length of over twenty inches and the thickness of a thumb; whilst in color they area vivid crimson, and in consistency they re- semble the plush-like fabric known as chenille. They last a long time in perfection, forming really wonderful examples as decorative speci- mens. Itls a gardener's plant par excellence, as it grows freely, is practically always in flower and of the easiest ; It is safe to say I that there is not another plant that will be so ex- ~ tensively grown for years to come, nor one that will prove so interesting and satisfactory to the grower. The plant is clothed with large green leaves and its spikes of blossoms spring from the axils of every leaf. They grow on the plants just as shown in the engraving.
