The upper end (r) is laid under the projecting head of the Tibia, at (uFig. III.) and it is laid flat upon it; so that this articulating and smooth surface (r)is smooth only for the sake of a very slight degree of shuffling motion. The lower end (s) is the larger.—It unites with the lower end of the Tibia (j6 ) to form the ancle joint. This guards the ancle joint without, as the Processof the Tibia guards it within. And this smooth articulating surface (if) is for re-ceiving the side of the Astragalus, that bone of the foot by which chiefly the anclejoint is formed. PLATE BONES PL X.
