City of Arts and Sciences and the Hemesferic in Valencia, Spain
Barcelona hosted the Olympics and Seville the World Expo but Spain's star of the future is Valencia. With a converted riverbed of the river Turia park the modern art museum and the City of Arts and Sciences. Valencia is emerging from the shadows with a revamped cultural infrastructure that aims to compete not just with her sister cities but with all of Europe This huge complex was designed by Valencia born world renown architect Santiago Calatrava. Pix shows The Hemesferic, part of the complex. It was the first building to be completed in 1998 an extraordinary Calatrava creation resembling a huge eyeball floating above a pool of water. The eye even blinks with the aid of a steel and glass shutter operated by hydraulic lifts. The building behind is the Palau de les arts opera house.
