October 22, 2012, New York, NY, US. Hundreds of people protesting police brutality marched from New York's Union Square through the city's East Village neighborhood marking the 17th National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality. The protest was organized by October 22nd Coalition. Marches were also planned in more than 30 other cities. Protesters at Union Square spoke of relatives killed by police and displayed signs denouncing the NYPD's stop and frisk policy which allows police officers to stop and search those they consider suspicious. In 2011 the tactic led to a reported 700,000 stops in the city. Critics say the tactic discriminates against black and Hispanic young men.
