His statue was placed, intriumphal robes and crowned with laurel, in the Temple ofJupiter. The people were ready to offer him the consulshipfor life. At that crisis of the Roman polity a true patriotmight have accepted the post of a constitutional sovereign,and done much to check the downward progress of publiclife which became now marked and rapid.—C.
