Returning now to the psychic pull. InExperiment 68 the table was pulled directlyinwards towards medium, against friction. Experiment 69: To investigate the pyschic pullwhen the table is lifted. I lifted the table into the air and asked theoperators to pull in as before, which they did A CANTILEVER THEORY 169 immediately. The pull was very perceptible, and, contrary to my expectations, its place ofapplication seemed somewhat low down underthe table, perhaps about a foot above the tests gave the same kind of , the pulling body (if I may soexpress it) seemed to my sense of feeling asthough it were pretty solid and not at all softand elastic. The table, in fact, was well andsolidly gripped. Now, the cantilever theoryshows a psychic arm like this— Table here K^ ^--,.=««™«-_ Column M. Fig. 30. Can the psychic pull be explained on thistheory? I think so. The column gets underthe table and grips by adhesion its undersurface; the operators then absorb the armbit by bit into the body of the medium. 170 REALITY OF PSYCHIC PHENOMENA the whole cantilever being thus continuallyshortened, and finally disappearing into thebody of the medium; the place of applicationof the pulling force is C, at the foot of thecolumn, and this accounts for the directionof pull appearing to be from well beneaththe surface of the table. The psychic pushis the opposite process, the cantilever beingpushed out from the body of the arm can also move to and fro is thus obvious that the arm has a range ofaction practically over the whole region withinthe circle, as well as over a considerablespace outside the circle in the vicinity of themedium. Let us now apply the cantilever theory tosome more of the experimental re
