Siege of Mayence 10 Sols banknote issued at Mainz (French Mayence); one of the oldest cities i n Germany. In 1792 the citizens welcomed the principles of the French Revolution and opened the gates to Republican troops. The Prussian army promptly laid siege to the city which was forced to surrender through starvation.
