Skull of Cro-Magnon man, side view. The term 'Cro- Magnon' is used in a general sense to refer to the earliest European examples of Homo sapiens, or modern man, living in Europe between about 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. They were anatomically similar to modern humans, although slightly more robust and with a larger brain capacity. They used flint tools, and also made paintings, sculptures, carvings and music. This skull, Cro-Magnon 1, was found at Les Eyzies in the Dordogne, France in 1868.
