Religious Statue of a Saint / St Roque (on the corner of St Christopher Street and St Ursula Street ) corner of a building in Valletta, Malta.

St Christopher Street corner with St Ursula Street is decorated with the statue of St Roque who is associated with the plague and relief from pestilence. A distinctive pedestal tapers from a Corinthian capital bearing an inscription on an ornamented shield. The saint is represented in his traditional apparel – the garb of a bearded pilgrim with a hat, staff and sea shell. His cloak is hoisted to reveal a modest wound on his thigh, and is accompanied by a dog carrying a bread bun in its mouth. According to tradition, in 1315 at the age of 20, on the death of his parents, St Roque set out as a mendicant pilgrim. Arriving in Italy during a plague epidemic he helped tend the sick with care. St Roque was himself infected by the plague and was expelled from the city. Living in the forest as a recluse he was cured by a dog licking his sores and bringing him a daily loaf of bread.
