Wukro is a medium-sized city located between Adigrat and Mekele and very convenient as a center from which to explore this rich and fascinating part of the Tigray. Its church excavated in the rock Wukro Cherkos is definitely the most accessible of the Tigray and one of the most impressive, although it does not get to be monolithic. Mekele The capital of the Tigray, Mekele has been described by a recent guide on Ethiopia (1995) as the "most elegant and fastest developing" city in the country.
