According to the Bible—actually Genesis 28 (10-22), Jacob had left Beersheba for Harran and stopped for the night. He lay down on the ground, taking a stone to put under his head, and fell asleep. He dreamed of a staircase leading to heaven, with angles going up and down the stairs (seen in this illustration). At the top was the Lord, who said to Jacob that he would give Jacob and his descendants the land on which he was lying and that these descendants would spread out everywhere. Jacob then set up a town there, called Bethel.
