Plaza Mayor and Cantilevers over Duero River, Almazán, Spain. Architect: ch+qs, 2012. Front elevation of 12th century church.
Settled in the middle of the Castillian Landscape, the historical town of Almazan appears strategically on the top of a walled hill. Surrounded by extraordinary monumental buildings, the Plaza Mayor de Almazan is shaped as a clear example of a “Spanish Square” in the historic city. The redevelopment of the Plaza has given a new projection of the old town of Almazan. People now enjoy the terraces of the bars placed in the square; the viewpoints “precariously” cantilevered over the river Douro are a new attraction for locals and tourists, who can enjoy the urban environment, the skyline and landscape.
