In 1601, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Shogunate, ordered all the feudal lords in Western Japan to contribute to the construction of Nijo Castle; it was finally completed during the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1626. This impressive castle, with mammoth walls, is one of the seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which have been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This image is from the central Ninomaru Palace. Note the interesting decorative Chrysanthemums, the symbol of the Emperor; paradoxically, of course, he became a relatively powerless figurehead during the Shogunate period.
