The business was basedupon automatic sprinklers, invented and patented by Mr. Rockwood, for extinguish-ing fires. The Rockwood system works automatically whenever a fire develops morethan the ordinary temperature and it has been the means of great saving from lossesin factories and stores and in saving in fire insurance cost. The business has grownto large proportions. In addition to manufacturing the sprinkling apparatus andother patented devices of Mr. Rockwood. the company has recently done a largebusiness in pressed steel products. The Worcester business is located at Nos. 38-56Harlow street, and in 1917 employed five hundred hands. In addition to the large. ^ J//yL6^^,.,^ AND ITS PEOPLE home plant there is a factory in Chicago. There are also branch oiftces in all theprincipal geographical areas of this country and Canada, New York, Boston, St. Louis,Detroit, Columbus, Louisville, Minneapolis, Montreal and elsewhere. The mainproduct of the factories is the Rockwood sprinkler head, of which several millionsare in use; the Rockwood automatic dry pipe valve and the Rockwood variable pres-sure alarm valve. In 1917 the capital stock of the Rockwood Sprinkler Company,was increased from $2,600 to $3,000. The company has large government contractsfor metal articles, the process of making which was devised by Mr. Rockwood. In1907-09 Mr. Rockwood was Professor of Thermo-Dynamics and Steam Engineeringat the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. To give some idea of the present volume ofbusiness done by this company, it may be said that at the present time the annualbusiness aggregates $2,700,000. Mr. Roc
