The American conflict : a history of the great rebellion in the United States of America, 1860-'64 : it's causes, incidents, and results, intended to exhibit especially its moral and political phases, with the drift and progress of American opinion respecting human slavery, from 1776 to the close of the War for the Union . for an opportunity towin the distinction you are capable of opportunity I shall endeavor to give you. Meantime, I desire you to dismiss from yourminds certain phrases which I am sorry to findmuch in vogue amongst you. I hear constantly of taking strong positionsand holding them—of lines of retreat and of basesof supplies. Let us discard such ideas. The strongest position a soldier sliould de-sire to occupy is one from which he can mosteasily advance against the enemy. Let us study the probalilo lines of retreat ofour opponents, and leave our own to take careof themselves. Let us look before, and not be-hind. Success and glory are in the and shame lurk in the rear. Let us act on this understanding, and it issafe to predict that your banners sliall be in-scribed with many a glorious deed, and tliatyour names will be dear to your countrymoaforever.
