Fire blackened Phra Mongkhon Bophit, Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok, Thailand, Asia.
Cast in bronze, between 3 and 4 inches thick, on a brick base, between 1703 and 1708, the huge statue is m high and m wide. Ayutthaya was the capital of Thailand between 1350 and 1767, when it was raised by the Burmese. The Buddha was burned by them to melt the gold leaf gilded on to it. The picture shows the fire blackened Buddha prior to its restoration.
