They havebeen printed in full, in order that the student mayhave the opportunity of dwelling leisurely upon thiscomplicated and most difficult part of the branch ofMateria Medica, and to save the necessity of extendedoral delivery. In this edition the names of the medicinalarticles and their preparations have been made to con-form to the United States Pharmacopoeia of 1863. With the hope that the work may prove serviceable,it has been inscribed to those in whose welfare I havethe highest interest, and for whose benefit the labor ofteaching becomes a pleasing occupation. October, MATERIA MEDICA. INTRODUCTORY OBSERVATIONS. The Science of Medicine has for its object the alleviationand cure of disease. Two kinds of agents are employed, Moraland Physical, the study and investigation of which constituteAcology, or the Science of Remedies. Moral agents are employed to impress the mind and feelings,and are not to be overlooked by physicians; while physicalagents are employed to act upon the body, and remove cor-poreal ailments. Physical agents are derived from the material world in whichwe dwell. Some of them are absolutely necessary for the main-tenance of life, and by proper management can be made to playan important part in the treatment of diseases; they come underthe head of Hygienic Eemedies.
