The sediment and im-purities left in the crude oil kettles is known as Footsand is drawn off into the tanks directly below the refiningkettles, where it is boiled and further treated with causticsoda before it is packed and sold as soap stock. The scale tank shown over the crude oil refiningkettles is used for weighing the lye before it is mixed withthe oil. Before the oil is manufactured into lard, it must betreated to remove all odors. This is done in the deodorizingtanks with live steam at a pressure of 135 pounds. Promhere it is taken to the small refining kettles and com-pounded with stearine and about 3 per cent of FullersEarth. This is pumped through a filter-press and fromthere gravitates back to the receiving tanks. The finishedproduct is now ready to be cooled over the lard roll andfrom there f
