Sir John Gilbert's (1817-1897) illustration of Guy Fawkes (1570-1606) being interrogated in the bedchamber of James I in Whitehall. Fawkes admitted his intention to blow up the House of Lords, and expressed regret at his failure to do so. His steadfast manner earned him the admiration of King James, it did not however, prevent him from ordering that he be tortured, to reveal the names of his co-conspirators.
