Seated couple, lady & child kneel in front of large basket & standing couple (L), man with cane near seated woman (R), group of people, one plays flute (L, middle ground) (BRD) frame-like acanthus-leaf decoration, with cartouches inserted once on each side & each corner Abbreviated version of complete composition (see GCPA 0181852). Central man in center leans on a stick. Panel was cut down & patched at top. Upper border is missing. Right-side of lower border appears to be rewoven. See other tapestries with same border design & similar treatment: GCPA 0181853:0181854. French & Flemish tapestries of similar subject are based on the "Italian Comedy" or "Fêtes Venitiennes". However, Bradshaw produced a totally new suite of scenes based on pictures by Watteau. This scene is partly based on either "Diavolo Player" or "L'Indifferent" at the Louvre (man with cane in center). "Départ pour Cythère" (woman on ground in center), Pater's "Colin Maillard" at Hertford House (couple on left) & Watteau's "Mariée de Village".
