His fiery dash anddaring were tempered by a shrewdness which kept himfrom sacrificing the science to the sport of hunting. The country he hunted covered a vast area, seventymiles by twenty, the greater part of which consisted ofold pastures, as fine as the very cream of the EnglishMidlands, and far larger in extent. Only one thing waslacking to make the country an ideal one for fox-hunting, and that was the presence of woodlands andcoverts in which the foxes might lie and breed.
