When one sees thepicture one is not surprised that it is the stage in which pain isthe marked feature—it is sometmes so marked that it suggestsa life and death struggle. The waves are not a continuoussuccession of contractions; it is a case of one great effortfollowed by a period of comparative rest while the musclebraces itself up for another powerful contraction. Thiscurious intermittent feature of the contractions is, I believe, characteristic of failing compensation, not only in the. Fig. 7. Radiogram ui oesophageal obstruction at the level of the6th dorsal vertebra. The cause in this case was a small peptic spasm that caused the obstruction was only brought on by givingdry bread. It was after this jirocedure that the bismuth food wasgiven, and the radiogram indicates the complete obstruction that hasresulted.
