Sheath blight disease genetics research. Geneticist loading plates containing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) into an automated genotyping system. The DNA is from a population of crop plants, some of which were affected by sheath blight disease. This disease, which can be fatal, is caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani. The results are being analysed (screen at right) to identify genes associated with sheath blight resistance. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the US Department of Agriculture. Photographed in the USA.
