A BAND of Indians under the notorious Chief Nana inthe month of July, 1881, had committed a number ofoutrages, killed several women and children and stolenconsiderable property along the San Andreas Mountainsin New Mexico, and Colonel E. Hatch with eight troops ofthe Ninth Cavalry and eight companies of infantry wassent to punish the savages and recapture the plunder. The command started in pursuit at once and in a num-ber of encounters drove the hostiles persistently from onepoint to another. A notable engagement occurred on August 12th nearCarrizo Canyon, in New Mexico. Nanas band was struckby a detachment of nineteen men under Captain the ensuing fight the troopers were outnumbered threeto one by the hostiles and lost one killed and threewounded, while one soldier was captured.
