Oesophagus ulcer. Endoscope view of the mid-part of the oesophagus (gullet) of a 38 year-old male patient. This patient is suffering from HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the condition that may lead to AIDS. The ulcer (lower centre) is one of three that have caused the patient difficulty and pain in swallowing, and may have arisen due to HIV. Following biopsies and further endoscopies, the ulcer showed no evidence of pathogens or neoplasia (cancer cell formation).
