PURPLE GLOW

The Tees Newport Bridge, enveloped in early autumn fog. When initially constructed, it was the first large, vertical lift bridge in Britain. It was built by Dorman Long, a local company also responsible for building the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia. Opened in 1934 by Prince Albert, Duke of York (later King George VI) it was lifted on average twice a day to allow ships to pass beneath, until around the 1960s when usage declined. It was last lifted in 1990. It is still used as a road bridge as part of the A1032.
