Scars on Church of St Cyril and St Methodius in Prague in the Czech Republic, the site of Czech resistance to the Nazis in WW2

During the Second World War a group of Czech Resistance fighters parachuted into Prague from England to organise resistance against the Germans occupying Prague. They assassinated Reinhard Heydrich, Deputy Reich-Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. On Himmler's orders, the Nazi retaliation was brutal. About 13,000 people were arrested, deported, imprisoned or killed. On 10 June, all males over the age of 16 in the village of Lidice, 22 km north-west of Prague, and another village, Ležáky, were murdered. The towns were burned and the ruins Czech fighters hid in this church but they and the priest who was helping them were betrayed and the Germans retailiated with gunfire. When it proved impossible the capture them, the Germans flooded the crypt where they were fighting from and all of them committed suicide. The memorial on the church wall outside records the events. Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Situated on the River Vltava in central Bohemia, Prague has been the political, cultural, and economic centre of the Czech state for more than 1100 years. Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. It is the sixth most-visited European city Prague suffered considerably less damage during World War II than some other major cities in the region, allowing most of its historic architecture to stay true to form.
