. The Worshipful Company of Painters, otherwise Painter-Stainers : its hall, pictures, and plate. The Painter-Stainers Company : its Hall,Pictures, and Plate. byW. HAYWARD PITMAN, , Deputy. Chairman of the Library Committee of the Corporation of London^ 1905* also of the City Lands Committee, 1909, and Master of tl>e Company, 1907-8. The Painters Company is an ancient art and mystery, and hath time out of mind been an ancient company and fellowship in the city of london. HESE are the words of an oldrecord, and it would not be difficultfor me to trace in outline theearliest history and growth of theCompany, I propose, however, in the first place,to refer to the Charters, the books, and the variousdocuments at this day in possession of the Com-pany, and let them recite their own 18 The Painter-Stainers Company. The oldest document now in the possession ofthe Company is the Inspeximus, or grant of bye-laws, and issued under the City Seal. It bears dateJuly 4th, 1467, the 6th year of the reign ofEdward IV. It is on one skin of parchment, inLatin, signed by Dunthorne, Town Clerk. Themayoralty seal attached is in good condition. The Company received a grant of Arms, asingle coat, as early as October 7th, i486, the firstyear of the reign of Henry VII. This document ison vellum and written in English, and is signed byThomas Benolt, who was Clarencieux King of Arms, though one regrets that it is now partially obliteratedand defaced. In the Court room is a splendid fac-simile copy of this grant of Arms, the work ofGeorge Bishop (herald painter to King GeorgeIV), a liveryman of the Company, and presentedby him in 1828. Cbarters.
