JOHN TRUMBULL, Historical Painter of theRevolution, was born in Lebanon, Connecti-cut, June 6, 1756, the son of Jonathan Trumbull,Governor of Connecticut during the Revolutionaryperiod and friend and counsellor of JOHN TRUMBULL John Trumbull entered Harvard at the age of six-teen and was graduated the following year in theClass of 1773. He early developed an aptitude fordrawing, studied such works on art as were obtain-able during his short course in College, and beganpainting immediately upon his graduation. On theoutbreak of the Revolutionary War he joined thepatriot army, and his skill as a draughtsman enablingliim to make drawings of the British works at Bostonhe was appointed by General Washington .-Mde-de-Camp on his staff. He subsequently served withGeneral Horatio Gates as Adjutant with the rank ofColonel, and took part as a volunteer aid in GeneralSullivans expedition for the recovery of RhodeIsland.
