Biomass-fired power station, producing electricity from recycled wood, Lunen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The power plant is fired with waste wood and generates around 150 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is fed into the public supply system under Germany's Renewable Energy Act. This quantity of electricity is equal to the needs of a small city, sufficing to supply 39,000 single-family households. Construction of the plant took 18 months and is located next to the Remondis Lippewerk facility, Europe's largest recycling centre. There is also wood treatment plant on the 230 hectare site from which the power station draws its fuel. The treatment facility handles 135,000 tons of waste wood annually, all from the region. The material reaches the furnace via a 180 meter long conveyor belt.
