Thus the death of Governor Smith became almostas much an part of the horrors of that heart-sickening morning in January, as if he had beenburned or manghHl with the otliers, with the addi-tional honor, that though occupying a high andhonorable place in the community, he lost his lifein the service of the poor and humble. His funeralwas a wide demonstration of sorrow and respect,the Legislature and State officers, with other publicofficials and numerous civic societies attending informal bodies for the purpose of testifying thepublic esteem and [lublic loss.
