It is a remarkable fact, worthyof special note, that Mr. Mitchell was born in the medical officers quarters of theold Military Hospital, which is now Parliament House, and therefore within a fewfeet of the site of the Mitchell Library, which is to contain his unique father, the Hon. Dr. James Mitchell, a member of the first Council appointedby the Imperial Government, and afterwards of the Legislative Council underresponsible Government, took a warm personal interest in the old Australian Sub-scription Library, on the committee of which he served for thirty-seven years, from1832 till 1869. Mr. Mitchell was one of the first batch of students at our LIniversity,going to the classes of Dr. Woolley at the age of i6. Among his fellow-studentswere the late Sir
