Although family had been in good circum-stances, when he was 17 years old he was thrownupon his own resources. After taking the usual pre-liminary studies, and teaching school to obtain themeans, he entered Dickinson College, at Carlisle,Penn., from which he graduated among the first inhis class, in 1829. He then resumed teaching, andhaving completed the course of study for the legalprofession, was admitted lo the bar at Chambersburg,Penn., in 1831. Soon afterward he removed to
