Clatterford, Isle of Wight, has a number of houses and cottages and the view towards Carisbrooke Castle was sketched by William Turner, lying off the main road from Newport via Carisbrooke towards Shorwell, Brighstone and Freshwater. There is a shallow ford where the road is crossed by the Lukely Brook stream. The land, also known and labelled on some maps as Frogland, is well drained but can be soggy after rain. Carisbrooke Castle overlooks the scene that was sketched by Turner, who included the church in the distance. The bubbly stream gurgles through the ford. It is thought a Roman villa had been located here adjacent to the fort that became Carisbrooke Castle.
