View NNW inside Halliggye Fogou, Cornwall, England, UK: an impressive underground structure built inside an Iron Age enclosed settlement known locally as a 'round'. There are two main passages built of drystone walling with massive capstones, each ending in a constricted exit & entrance passage called a 'creep'. Modern steps lead down into this long straight sloping passage with a creep at its N end leading to the earthen rampart of the round. To the L (W) is the entrance to a long curving passage with a trip stone & creep at its SW end. The farmstead was home to several families living in 4 or 5 houses, it was occupied for some 700 years from the Late Iron Age through to the end of the Roman period around AD 400. Fogous may have been used to preserve & store food, for rituals & ceremonies, &/or employed as refuges & escape tunnels during raids. The fogou is closed from the start of October to the end of April because of roosting Greater Horseshoe bats.
