01/04/16 A gardener has been stunned by huge numbers of newts that are living in his pond. Common newts and the much rarer and protected species of Great crested newts can be spotted within seconds in and around the ornamental garden pond near Wirksworth in Derbyshire. Great crested newts are a European protected species. The animals, its eggs and their breeding sites and resting places are protected by law. The gardener, who wishes not to be named so as to keep the location of the newts a strict secret said: "We've had the odd one or two here for the last few years. But this year there are simply masses of them. "You only need to stand here for a few seconds and you can easily see a dozen or so. " "There's a mix of adults and some young still in the water with their gills. "The adult females are the largest - I saw one today that was more than four inches long. There's also more frogs and frogspawn in the pond than ever before this year. Newts like to eat frog tadpoles so I guess that's one of the reasons why they're doing so well this year" he said.
