An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (1787–1851), better known as Louis Daguerre and an illustration of a camera. Daguerre was a French artist and photographer, recognized for his invention of the daguerreotype process of photography. He was one of the fathers of photography. A camera exposure lasting for hours or days was required before Daguerre's method. The daguerreotype was the Polaroid film of its day: it produced a one off image which could only be duplicated by using a camera to photograph the original. Despite this drawback, millions of daguerreotypes were produced. It was capable of extremely fine detail. A negative-positive print-making process was available in the 1850s. These new types of images were much less expensive than daguerreotypes, and they were easier to view. By 1860 few photographers were still using Daguerre's process. This card is from a 1929 set entitled 'Scientific Inventions and Discoveries' (35 cards in the series). The firm of R and J Hill Cigarettes was established on Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London in the 1700s. In the twentieth century the company issued cards with their Sunripe and Spinet Oval cigarettes. The firm expanded to include H Archer and Co and issued cards, like this set, under 'The Spinet House' brand. The company no longer exists.
