Honey bee fungus research. Entomologists using a microscope to look at spores of the honey bee fungal parasite Nosema ceranae, which can replicate in cells lining the honey bee gut. Nosema causes the disease nosemosis, a possible cause of the syndrome known as 'colony collapse disorder' (CCD). CCD is the sudden disappearance of worker bees from a colony. The cause is poorly understood, but may be due to a combination of factors, such as mite infestation or various viruses.
