Vilnius Sport complex and Palace of Concerts and Sports, also known as the Sporto Rūmai, Vilnius, Lithuania, Europe, EU

In the year 1985 the odyssey of the football stadium started. Lithuania was part of Soviet Empire. After years of planning, the construction phase started in 1987. The construction moved on. By 1991 the fundament and the frame showed up. But meanwhile in Lithuania, revolutionary breakouts started and led to the regain of independence. The Soviet Empire fell apart and and also the construction of the new stadium in Vilnius started to hesitate. In 1997 the building process stopped finally. Ten years later the government tried to reanimate this project but it became clear that it was necessary to invest about 300 million litas (Euro 87 million approximately). In times of the financial crisis this new start failed as well. The “monument of corruption and disorder” (Lietuvas Rytas 21 May 2013) is also 25 years after the beginning of construction a ruin. So what is the latest status of the project? In June 2014 there was founded a working group for coordination of the implementation of the project of the Complex. The costs of the infrastructure of the Complex will amount million litas (over Euro 112 milion). 270 million litas will be needed just for the construction of the stadium and additionally million litas for the access and surrounding infrastructure. This surrounding would consider a track and field athletic stadium, an indoor stadium and a swimming pool. “The multifunctional Complex for Health Promotion, Education and Employment could meet not only sports needs, but significantly wider needs – it would promote health, education and employment activities and would be useful at a regional level”, explained Irma Juskenaite, Head of Public Relations Division to One Nil Up. Now the working group with Artūras Zuokas, the major of Vilnius included, wants to start a new attempt to finish the project through a Public-Private Partnership. For this the authorities will apply for EU structural funds.
