In 1854 he removed to Sierra County, andwas one of sixteen who originated the mining enter-prise known as the Masonic and Highland MiningCompany, to work the Blue Gravel lead near ForestCity, and there erected the second steam Imistingworks erected in the State. This was his first ex-perience in deep mining. He was then engaged inpractical mining for seven years. In 1862 ho received a commission as Colonel ofone of the Maryland regiments engaged in the CivilWar, and at once sold his interests in Sierra County,and started east on the ill-fated steamer Golden Gate, 512 HISTORY OF THE STATE OF ^ PHOTO, ar JOHN s- hoc, viroinia, ncv. Col. C. C. Thomas. burned oiF the coast of Mexico, wherebj 600 liveswere lost. At the time of this terrible calamity, ColonelThomas remained on the ship, giving all the assis-tance in his power, and, when the heat becameunendurable, cast himself into the waters and swamashore. He, and about 100 others, being all thatwere saved. Soon after, obtaining passage to SanFrancisco, and finding it impossible to resume hisjourney, resigned his commission, and accepted theposition of Superintendent of the North PotosiMine, and removed to Nevada. During his resi-dence in Nevada, he has been at various times Super-intendent of the Overman, Uncle Sara, and of theHalo & Norcross for nearlj three years, in whichtime a large amount in dividends were paidto the stockholder.^.
