In that year the Vassalls altered their family motto fromSaepe pro rcge, semper pro republica, which they had splendidlyexemplified against Charles I. in the English Civil War, to Semperpro rege, and proceeded just as gallantly to live up to the revisedversion. In consequence the entire family was exiled and theirestates confiscated. After their return to England in 1776members of the family distinguished themselves in the Britisharmy and navy. •64.
