The Wodaabe people are nomadic cattle-herders who migrate through the Sahel region of Central Africa in search of grazing for their cattle. Large family groups travel on foot, donkey or camel during the rainy season and camp at each grazing spot for a couple of days. Their belongings are few and thus easily transported to a new location. A large wooden bed is the most important possession of each family. These hand-carved wooden bunk beds are often painted in strong geometric patterns and have screens for privacy. They are piled high with heavily decorated baskets and the women's prized calabashes which are seen as a status symbol. Photographed at the Gerewol festival in Chad, Central Africa.
