Ciguatera dinoflagellate. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Gambierdiscus toxicus dinoflagellate. Dinoflagellates are unicellular protozoans and this particular species is photosynthetic. It is known to produce the toxin ciguatoxin, a fish poison that accumulates in large coral reef fish. If eaten by humans it can cause the food poisoning illness ciguatera.
