In the engraving the No. 7 catcher is shown with theparts in their engaged positions. The check pawl 710 ispivoted to the drum and the centrifugal pawl 703 is pivotedto the check pawl. Normally both pawls revolve with thedrum clear of the teeth, as the drum turns back andforth to pay out and take in slack rope under the actionof the tension spring 720. When the trolley jumps thejerk on the rope causes the centrifugal pawl to fly out andengage one of the teeth in the back, and as the drumrotates further the check pawl 710 is forced out into en-gagement with another tooth, thereby positively checkingany further upward movement of the pawl. The drum isnot locked by the engagement of the pawls with the ratchetteeth, but merely checked to prevent the further unwindingof the rope, and should the trolley pole strike a span wire. C.\TCHER WITH PARTS and be brought to a lower position the drum will imme-diately take in the slack rope and the pawls will re-engageto check the pole in this lower position. In these devicesthe desirable feature of positive catch is , it will be appreciated that the thrust or blowby reason of the sudden jerk of the trolley is minimizedby this union of clutches together with the elasticity gainedby reason of the centrifugal pawl spring. The emergencyrelease of the No. 8 catcher consists of a ratchet ring hav-ing internal and external teeth, the latter being engaged bya release lever. When the end of the release lever is de-pressed the ratchet ring is free to turn and the pole maythen be run up to the wire at any speed. Although the catcher has just been placed on the marketthe company has already received an order from a largecity railway for 1650 catchers and an order from anothercity for 200 catchers, besides many small
