On the paradeground in the north-east angle of the wall was a shortfiring-range, where men fired with obsolete gunsat a target about three feet six inches high, and18 inches wide, at a distance of 80 yards. Most ofthe marksmen sat on their heels, placed an elbowon each knee, shut their eyes, and let go. Of coursethey rarely hit the target.
