Whitehall protest against deportation of gay asylum seeker Mehdi Kazemi, who faces death penalty in Iran
Mehdi Kazemim as been refused permission to stay in Britain, and is due to be deported by the UK government to Iran, where homosexuality is a crime punishable by death, and one for which the regime have already executed his boyfriend. Protesters from Middle East Workers' Solidarity, the National Union of Students LGBT campaign, OutRage! and Hands off the People of Iran demonstrated opposite Downing Street in Whitehall against the government's decision. They also called for training on sexual orientation for staff dealing with asylum issues and an explicit policy recognising the persecution LGBT asylum seekers face in some countries and their need for asylum.
