But to the British firmsintense astonishment, they found themselves face to facewith a vast and powerful trade organisation of whose veryexistence they were probably ignorant, which calmly (onbehalf of the delinquent Japanese firm) informed the Britishone that though the money would be paid if pressed for,it might be to their (the foreigners) advantage to com-promise. Upon inquiry the latter discovered that werethey to press for payment in full, a boycott would be issued.
