The illustrations of the experiments are in every case fromphotographs of experiments in successful operation. Suchpictures, while inferior in clearness of detail and perhaps inartistic effect to good drawings, have at least this conspicuousmerit, that they may be accepted and followed with perfectconfidence. In developing the course and the experiments hereinrecommended, I have tried to utilize, and, naturally, toimprove upon, the best work done by others in the same account is taken in these pages of the exact appliancesand methods with which the classical work of
